    Detailed Product Overview

The HIOKI BT4560-60 Battery Impedance Meter is engineered for precise measurement of lithium-ion battery cell (LiB) impedance, covering a broad frequency range from 0.01 Hz to 10 kHz and a DC voltage measurement range of ±5 V. The extended upper frequency limit enables advanced analysis of high-frequency impedance behavior, allowing observation of SEI-related phenomena and separator characteristics for a more comprehensive understanding of electrochemical processes. With selectable measurement ranges of 3 mΩ, 10 mΩ, and 100 mΩ, the instrument is well suited for evaluating large-capacity cells with extremely low internal resistance, such as those used in traction batteries and energy-storage systems.

A maximum test current of 1.5 A rms is available in the 3 mΩ range, with proportionally reduced values in higher ranges. The minimum impedance resolution of 0.1 µΩ ensures highly accurate characterization even at very low impedances. The four-terminal-pair measurement configuration minimizes errors caused by lead resistance, magnetic coupling, and eddy currents. Building on the classical four-terminal method, it uses shielded current and voltage pairs, as commonly implemented in LCR meters and impedance analyzers, to further reduce coupling and phase errors at higher frequencies. The instrument supports cell voltage measurements of either polarity within ±5 V, meaning connection polarity does not affect the measurement results.

Applications and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)

The BT4560-60 is used for evaluating large-capacity cells in traction batteries and stationary energy-storage systems. In production, it supports impedance verification during the final stages of cell assembly. In pack and module manufacturing, it enables incoming inspection and cell qualification to ensure performance consistency before installation. In research and development environments, it is used to investigate impedance behavior, diffusion characteristics, and degradation mechanisms associated with state of health (SoH). The extended 10 kHz limit further supports high-frequency analysis of interfacial processes and dielectric responses. The instrument is also ideal for cell matching, where cells are grouped according to impedance and capacity to achieve uniform performance in assembled packs.

When connected to a PC—typically via USB—the BT4560-50 can perform electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The included software manages frequency sweeps, collects impedance data, and displays Nyquist and Bode plots for interpretation. This configuration is well suited for laboratory use, where detailed impedance measurements are performed directly from a computer. Data can also be exported to ZView® for advanced equivalent-circuit modeling.

    Perfect for System Integration

Equipped with LAN and RS-232C interfaces and an EXT. I/O port for trigger and control signals, the BT4560-50 integrates seamlessly into automated test systems. It can communicate with external controllers or multiplexing systems for sequence control, making it highly adaptable for production lines and quality-assurance environments. LabVIEW drivers and example programs are provided for PC-based automation and custom software development. The instrument can also be operated directly by a PLC or paired with HIOKI SW1001 / SW1002 multiplexers and other switching solutions, offering a practical platform for automated battery test setups.

The BT4560-50 performs impedance measurement using a low-level AC signal that does not disturb the electrochemical state of the cell, allowing accurate evaluation without heating or degrading high-capacity or newly developed cell types. A range of measurement cables is available for both laboratory and production use. The L2002 Kelvin clip lead is designed for laminated cells such as pouch types, while the L2003 Kelvin pin lead is suitable for cylindrical or mounted cells, including those used in automated fixtures. Manufactured in Japan, the BT4560-50 delivers the precision, stability, and reliability required for modern battery-cell impedance evaluation in both research and industrial settings.
