Measurement of electrical capacitance of capacitors:

    Detailed Product Overview

The Hioki IM3536 is a high-performance benchtop LCR meter that combines wide frequency coverage, fast measurement speed, and intuitive operation. Covering a range from DC and 4 Hz up to 8 MHz, it meets a broad spectrum of component testing needs—from low-frequency inductive devices to capacitive components characterized at MHz frequencies. A large capacitive touch display ensures easy operation even in complex setups, while the Fast Mode enables measurements in as little as 1 ms per point.

With a basic impedance accuracy of ±0.05%, phase accuracy of ±0.03°, and a guaranteed accuracy range from 1 mΩ to 200 MΩ, the IM3536 provides precise, repeatable results for a wide range of components, including capacitors, inductors, resistors, coils, and transformers. Its exceptional repeatability makes it ideal for low-ESR measurements of electrolytic capacitors and impedance testing of power supply coils, where stable frequency characteristics are essential.

Frequency coverage from 4 Hz to 8 MHz

Measurement conditions can be freely adjusted with frequencies from DC/4 Hz up to 8 MHz, test signal voltages from 10 mV to 5 Vrms, and test currents from 10 μA to 100 mArms. This flexibility allows evaluation of coil resonance points or characterization of components whose behavior depends on signal amplitude, ensuring realistic testing under application-specific conditions.

DC bias testing is supported by an internal source up to 2.5 V, ideal for capacitor testing, while optional external bias units extend the range for higher voltage or current applications. The instrument can also calculate material parameters such as conductivity and dielectric constant when the geometry of the sample is specified, expanding its capabilities beyond conventional LCR measurements.

    Perfect for production integration

The IM3536 offers comparator and BIN functions along with a full set of industrial interfaces—LAN, GPIB, RS-232C, and handler I/O—for seamless integration into automated production systems. The handler interface provides digital control signals, comparator outputs, and BCD-coded measurement values for sorting and classification. Residual charge protection prevents measurement errors and protects the input circuitry if charged capacitors are accidentally connected.

In addition to AC impedance, the instrument also supports DC resistance measurements, allowing both parameters to be obtained within a single test sequence—ideal for production environments where efficiency and reliability are key.

    At home in laboratories

For laboratory and R&D applications, the IM3536 features a USB interface for direct PC connection. The included software supports frequency, voltage, and current sweeps, with data logging directly into Microsoft Excel or as CSV files for further analysis. The large touch display and broad selection of test fixtures make it easy to adapt the instrument to different component types in development, evaluation, or quality control environments.

Additional functions ensure stable and accurate measurements even under demanding conditions. In LowZ high-accuracy mode, the output resistance is set to 10 Ω, allowing higher test currents—ideal for ESR measurements of electrolytic capacitors or inductance testing of low-inductance components. The waveform averaging function reduces noise and improves repeatability, while the contact check function with adjustable thresholds ensures proper connection of the DUT, minimizing measurement errors in both automated and manual setups.
