Battery internal impedance measurement:
Detailed Product Overview
The HIOKI IM3590 is a chemical impedance analyzer designed for the evaluation of electrochemical devices such as battery cells and supercapacitors. It combines wide-range frequency sweep measurements from 1 mHz to 200 kHz with equivalent circuit analysis, supporting detailed impedance characterization of electrochemical components.
Battery Mode
A dedicated battery mode enables direct electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of battery cells. In this mode, the instrument applies an automatic DC bias that is adjusted to the cell voltage, establishing the electrical potential conditions required for impedance analysis of batteries.
This allows frequency-dependent analysis of charge-transfer resistance, ion conductivity, and diffusion behavior under realistic operating conditions. The IM3590 supports electrochemical impedance measurements in the impedance range from approximately 100 mΩ to 10 Ω, making it suitable for the evaluation of battery cells with internal resistances above approximately 10 mΩ.
Frequency Sweep and Equivalent Circuit Analysis
The IM3590 supports frequency sweep measurements over the full measurement range with up to 800 configurable frequency points. This enables detailed frequency-dependent impedance analysis and provides the basis for Nyquist and Bode evaluations of electrochemical systems.
For circuit modeling, the instrument offers multiple electrochemical equivalent circuit models, including unipolar and polar configurations, as well as standard LCR component models. These models allow parameters such as electrolyte resistance, charge-transfer resistance, double-layer capacitance, constant phase elements, and inductance to be extracted directly from sweep data.
Measurement Parameters and Automation
For frequency sweep measurements and equivalent circuit analysis, the IM3590 provides a measurement speed of up to 2 ms, depending on the measurement frequency, with a basic accuracy of ±0.05%. Test signal voltage and current can be set from 5 mV to 5 V and from 10 µA to 100 mA. When used with the optional 9478 Sheath Type Temperature Probe, temperature-dependent impedance measurements are supported, allowing impedance characteristics and equivalent circuit parameters to be evaluated as a function of temperature.
The instrument also features a comparator and BIN function for automated pass/fail classification, useful in incoming inspection or production screening of cells and capacitors. Interfaces include USB as standard, with LAN, RS-232C, and GP-IB available as options. The 5.7” color TFT touchscreen provides intuitive operation and clear visualization of parameters and plots. Designed and manufactured in Japan, the IM3590 reflects HIOKI’s focus on long-term measurement stability in daily engineering and laboratory use.
