Memory Recorder Modules

Detailed Product Overview

The MR8848 Memory Recorder is a modular, high-speed data acquisition system engineered for accurate waveform recording in demanding environments. Its rugged, shock-resistant construction makes it ideal for both field and laboratory use—especially where vibration, temperature variations, or rough handling are expected. With a button-operated interface and durable design, the MR8848 is built for long-term, real-world testing where reliability is essential.

The system includes eight input slots and supports a wide range of interchangeable modules, offering exceptional flexibility across diverse measurement applications. It can record multiple physical parameters simultaneously—including voltage, current, logic signals, temperature, vibration, pressure, and strain—enabling comprehensive analysis of complex systems. Depending on the selected modules, users can configure the system for simultaneous isolated measurement on up to 32 analog channels, or for high-speed acquisition up to 20 MS/s. A dedicated high-voltage module allows direct measurement up to 1000 VDC or 700 VAC.

The MR8848 also supports direct connection of HIOKI’s high-accuracy current sensors. Wideband probes such as the CT6711 can be paired with analog modules like the U8978, while dedicated current modules—including the U8977 and 8971—provide precise measurement across a broad current range. These modules work seamlessly with precision clamps and sensors such as the CT6841A or CT6904A. They automatically detect and power connected HIOKI sensors, streamlining setup and ensuring reliable operation.

Four built-in logic inputs support up to 16 logic channels when paired with four-channel logic probes. Additional logic input modules can be installed to further expand digital acquisition capabilities.

Three compatible output modules add functions such as pulse output and waveform generation for signal testing and simulation. The Arbitrary Waveform Generator Module U8793 enables users to create and output custom waveforms—perfect for reproducing anomalies or simulating complex behaviors. The free SF8000 software simplifies waveform development, offering direct data entry, noise simulation, and waveform combination for advanced applications.

To support long-duration and uninterrupted recording, the MR8848 offers the optional real-time saving function MR9001-01, allowing data to be written directly to the optional 1 TB SSD or to external storage such as an SD card or USB drive during measurement. Unlike systems that rely on internal memory buffering, this architecture eliminates the need to pause testing for data transfer, enabling continuous, long-term data acquisition. Real-time saving also reduces the risk of data loss during unexpected power interruptions, ensuring stable and reliable logging.

The optional DC Power Unit 9784, installed at the factory, enables operation from external DC sources between 10 V and 28 V—such as vehicle batteries. This wide input range eliminates the need for AC power or external converters, making it ideal for field measurements and mobile testing. Integrated directly into the instrument at production, the 9784 provides a compact and dependable power solution for operation on the move.

The factory-installed U8351 Printer Unit enables immediate, tamper-proof printouts of waveforms and measurement results directly at the test site. It is ideal for regulatory documentation, service records, customer acceptance tests, or any environment where digital media are impractical or restricted. The printer delivers fast, on-site documentation without requiring a PC or external storage.

Included software tools ensure a smooth workflow. The free MR6000 Viewer and Waveform Viewer allow intuitive display, analysis, and export of recorded data. For more advanced processing, the 9335 Wave Processor adds powerful analysis and batch conversion functions. Integration with LabVIEW, MATLAB, and SCPI ensures flexible automation and remote control.

The MR8848 is widely used across infrastructure and transportation sectors, where its high-speed, multi-channel capability and modular design make it a powerful tool for system diagnostics and validation. In electric power systems, it supports UPS testing by simultaneously recording voltage, current, and temperature on both input and output sides to ensure reliable backup activation. In hydropower plants, it enables detailed load rejection testing—capturing turbine speed, generator current, and water pressure to verify safe shutdown following a sudden load drop.

For high-voltage circuit breaker testing, the MR8848 measures the timing differences between control signals and contact operations across all three phases, helping identify delays and ensuring compliance with switching standards. In the railway sector, it records traction motor voltage and current, vehicle speed, brake pressure, and vibration during actual operation—providing essential insight for correlating multi-parameter behavior and validating safety-critical subsystems.
